What skill level is the workshop for?
Intermediate painters who already have some experience with oil or acrylic.
Can I paint in either oil or acrylic?
Yes. The workshop is suitable for both oil and acrylic painters.
Do I need to bring my own supplies?
Yes. Bring your usual paints, brushes, palette, easel and painting equipment. A detailed supply list will be provided. There are a few special items, measuring tape / ruler, backerboard to mount 9 x 12 StudioSheet… full list will be provided.
What will we paint?
We’ll work with a landscape and focus on rocks, trees, water, atmospheric perspective, value and composition.
What happens on Day One?
We’ll begin with short painting exercises, then paint a 9 × 12 StudioSheet to practise the process.
What happens on Day Two?
You’ll take what you learned and develop the painting on a larger blank canvas, using the three-step studio process. We use our StudioSheet and create a larger version of this study.
Do I need to know how to draw?
Basic drawing experience is helpful, but the emphasis is on painting, observation and developing a strong painting structure. There is no drawing day one and a very loose drawing day 2. this drawing is guided.
Will there be demonstrations?
Yes. Demonstrations and instruction will be combined with plenty of individual painting time.
Will I receive individual help?
Yes. The workshop is limited in size so there is time for individual instruction and feedback.
What should I expect to learn?
A dependable process for starting and developing a painting, with particular attention to value, depth, composition, colour and brushwork.
Do I need to finish the painting?
No. The goal is not simply to finish a painting. The goal is to understand and practise a process you can use in your own studio. However most artist will finish their painting.
